Mozart was only sixteen when Lucio Silla was created in Milan one December evening of 1772. The opera is centered around the love roman dictator Lucio Silla bears for his enemy's daughter Giunia, who favours the exiled senator Cecilio as the object of her affection.

SYNOPSIS Rome is ruled by the dictator Lucio Silla. Cecilio, banished for plotting against Silla, learns from his friend Cinna that Silla, declaring him dead, is chasing Cecilio's fiance, Junia. Junia, daughter of Sulla's defeated enemy Marius, rejects Sulla's advances at all costs. Cecilio then returns in secret from exile to Rome to reclaim Junia. However, he is caught and sent to prison. Luckily, Cinna saves the day. He agrees to marry Silla's sister, Celia. In return Celia persuades her brother to free Cecilio and allow him to marry Junia.
